I think it’s pretty clear in the cinematic he states he is nothing without sargeras. His entire purpose was to end the crusade and illidan wants to fight him. This should please all the people botching that illidan would be Kerrigan and make a sacrifice to save everyone, because he didn’t. He didn’t need to stay. He wanted to and he wants to fight sargeras.
It wasn't a red herring, it was out of context. Illidan still stayed there as a Warden, to kick Sargeras' ass everytime he tries to escape, much like Maiev in the past.
